We celebrated Dr Billy Gallagher's birthday on the 17th of August, and in honour of the late, great icon of our industry, the South African Chefs Association created an award in his name, recognising Billy's incredible heart for charitable causes and his innately compassionate nature.
As one of the founding members of Chefs with Compassion, SA Chefs Association was directly involved in the establishment of our food rescue movement, whose mission is to Rescue, Cook and Feed. There have been so many people who have displayed such incredible compassion in the months since lockdown and it was an almost impossible task to create a shortlist of candidates for the inaugural Bill Gallagher Humanitarian Award. This award is about more than numbers – it's also about impact, inspiration, dedication and sacrifice, which our incredible kitchen hubs display in abundance.
The final list of nominees for this year's Bill Gallagher Humanitarian Award were:

We are humbled by the ongoing commitment and dedication of these individuals to giving of their time and resources to serve their fellow South Africans. Hats off to these great men and women, and a huge congratulations to the five winners of the 2020 Bill Gallagher Humanitarian Award:
– Carol Madumo, who has extended her reach far into the Ekurhuleni community
– Jodi Gillespie, Chefs with Compassion's Durban champion
– Nosiphiwo Masikane of Ladies On Wheels, a constant source of inspiration to many
– Wynand du Plessis of Extreme Soupathon, who sprung into action at the start of lockdown and has served 554 764 cups of soup since April
And the Champion award went to a man who is no stranger to Chefs with Compassion, who was instrumental in founding our movement, and who continues to give selflessly of himself to helping the needy and vulnerable in every way humanly possible. Philippe Frydman, you are a mensch in the truest sense of the word. A enormous acknowledgment also to Mr Mathew Abraham of Thava Indian Restaurant for his unwavering support of Philippe's herculean efforts.
We salute these incredible humans, along with their extended network of staff, volunteers, suppliers, donors and supporters – and the dozens of other individuals making a difference where it's needed most.
