Where to begin to tell the story of Thava… Perhaps at the beginning, when lockdown had just started, on Monday 6th April, to be precise. That’s the day we as Chefs with Compassion record as Day 1, but it was, in fact, the day that Mathew Abrahams Chef/Patron of the Thava Indian Restaurant Group, in a collaboration spearheaded by Hanneke van Linge from Nosh Food Rescue NPC and Philippe Frydman from Oakfield Farm Wedding Venue, started cooking meals using food rescued from markets, farms and retailers to feed people who had nothing. From 350 meals per day, Thava’s production of mouth-wateringly delicious Indian meals has become a massive 1 500 meals per day, and out of this, Kitchens with Compassion was born. A month later, Chefs with Compassion was formed to allow their vision to expand into a national operation, and today, Chefs with Compassion proudly supplies 30 kitchens and over 100 charities with meals. Today, the 1st of June, is Thava’s 45th day of providing meals to those in need, and they have served 41 364 meals in that time.
Mr Mathew, Chef Philippe, Vibin Varghese and the chefs of Thava Indian Restaurant who have worked tirelessly day after day, you are true heroes.
